What is FCS?

Family Consumer Science can be defined as the following:

The science and art of career planning, job skills, resource management, time management, nutrition, food preparation, menu planning, parenting, child care and development, healthy living, clothing and textiles, consumer education, decision making, problem solving, human relationships, family development, and anything else that touches the home and heart.

FCS 2 Course Description 


Family Consumer Science II will build on skills learned in Family Consumer Science I.  Students will explore a variety of concepts including consumer choices, personal development, food preparation, nutrition, sewing, and design techniques.  Students will be required to provide basic sewing supplies.  (Family Consumer Science I is a prerequisite for this course.)

Recent FCS II Assignments

  • Interior Design At the end of the semester (after the sewing unit is over) students will work on this interior design project.(50 Project Points) These days will be used to create a Dream Room design board that will include a room drafting plan, an elevation drawing, a description of the rooms style, and samples of design elements.  Here is an example:Students will also turn in a completed Interior Design Worksheet. Below are some resources for ideas and design elements:DigsDigs--  A lot of new and funky design ideas.  It does have a lot of advertising here, so just look at the pictures for ideas, don't click links that will take you off-site.Pottery Barn Teen-- Teenage decorating ideas ...

  • Trash to Triumph Project Ideas Today we are going to talk about ways you can reduce, reuse, recycle, and rethink when it comes to sewing and crafting. Here are just a few ideas:     Now that you're class has watched how to reuse items to make other items it's time to test your creativity.  In your table groups  you need 1 piece of paper with EVERYONE's name on it.  Then come up with a new idea on how to use the following items.  (You can NOT use the same ideas listed above.) Items to REUSE: Plastic Soda BottleCapri Sun PackageOld T-shirts Your group should sketch what the final product will look like and write basic directions.

  • Sewing Practice Papers Monday through ThursdayNovember 14-17, 2011Before sewing it is important that you know who will work on what machines and how to use the machines correctly.  These videos will walk you through some of that information and then show you how to do the practice papers.  Students will practice sewing on papers with the sewing machine.  This helps develop basic skills before students start projects. Students will complete the following:4 points Mountains4 points Waves4 points Circles4 points Envelope24 points Fish and Stitch (With Thread)The Sewing Practice Papers are graded with the Sewing Practice Papers Rubric.

  • PJ Pant Patterns Friday, November 11, 2011 Some students will do sewing machine retakes today while others take their measurements and cut out their pajama pant patterns.  If time allows students will also pin their patterns onto their fabric.
