What is FCS?

Family Consumer Science can be defined as the following:

The science and art of career planning, job skills, resource management, time management, nutrition, food preparation, menu planning, parenting, child care and development, healthy living, clothing and textiles, consumer education, decision making, problem solving, human relationships, family development, and anything else that touches the home and heart.

FCS 1 Course Description 


This course is designed for the student who has an interest in nutrition, food preparation skills, sewing and the development of healthy family and community relationships. Students will explore the importance of making wise consumer choices. Time will be spent examining the importance of family relationships, studying and preparing a variety of foods, and constructing a variety of sewing projects. Students are responsible for providing their own basic sewing supplies. (This course is a prerequisite for Family Consumer Science II).

Recent FCS 1 Assignments

  • Sewing Projects The sewing projects for FCS 1 include:PillowcasePencil PouchHandsewing ProjectStudents will work on these projects up until the last part of the semester.  Students will rotate on and off sewing machines at school as needed and work on handsewing when there is not an available sewing machine.

  • Pillowcase 90 Classwork Points Students will make the Pillowcase using these Pillowcase Directions. Students will view three pillowcase tutorials to help them process the directions.      Students are graded using the Pillowcase Rubric.

  • How to Tread the Sewing Machine Today students learned how to thread the sewing machines and how to sew on the machines.  The week after Thanksgiving they will begin  demonstrating how to thread the machine to Mrs. Stucker and receive a bobbin.  Once they have a bobbin a student will wind the bobbin and sewing their Fish and Stitch Paper with thread.

  • Sewing Practice Papers Before sewing it is important that you know who will work on what machines and how to use the machines correctly.  These videos will walk you through some of that information and then show you how to do the practice papers.  Students will practice sewing on papers with the sewing machine.  This helps develop basic skills before students start projects. Students will complete the following:4 points Mountains4 points Waves4 points Circles4 points Envelope24 points Fish and Stitch (With Thread)The Sewing Practice Papers are graded with the Sewing Practice Papers Rubric.

  • Handsewing Stitch Sampler Project Introduced on Tuesday November 15, 2011Project DUE on Monday, November 28, 201140 Points After students pass their sewing machine test they will begin a Handsewing stitch sampler.  The sampler will be graded using the Handsewing Stitch Sampler Rubric.  Students will practice a variety of stitches on a piece of felt.  Supplies for this project are provided through class fees. Here is an example of the handsewing stitch sampler: Here are some videos that students watched to help them remember how to do the hand sewing stitches.  Students also had access to posters and directions of the Hand Sewing Stitch Guide.  Sewing Videos How to Thread a Needle:  Preparing for your Hand sewing SamplerBackstitchOvercast StitchButtonhole ...
